“What is the highest note that you can play?” “What is the worst gig that you have played?” “What is the best gig that you have played?” “What is the hardest thing you have ever played?” “What is the worst thing you saw while you were a firefighter?” “What is” questions are asked in every profession. Sometimes they are answered with a watered-down version of the truth, sometimes with a splash of…

Children Will Listen “Careful the things you say
Children will listen
Careful the things you do
Children will see and learn
Children may not obey, but children will listen
Children will look to you for which way to turn
To learn what to be
Careful before you say ‘Listen to me’
Children will listen” Into the Woods is one of my favorite musicals. Ever! The first time I experienced Into the Woods…

Working at a theme park is a pretty cool gig. I enjoy the interaction with guests and the ability to help people forget about the stress and pressure of life for a short time. The joy I feel working at the theme park is similar to the joy I feel when I am playing my trumpet in concert. It doesn’t matter if I am playing with a small combo at a small venue, or a big band, rock band, or whatever…

As entertainers, we portray characters. Many times, we leave our characters on the stage and then go on with our lives. However… Leaving a character on the stage is not easy for all. Please remember, I am not a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, psychotherapist, or any flavor psycho-type doctor. In truth, I am no type of doctor at all. I will leave it to you to determine my level of psycho. :) How…

The act of sniffing a candle does not fall at the top of my “All-time favorites” list. The act of lighting a candle does not fall at the top of my “All-time favorites” list. The first time I heard the Haydn Trumpet Concerto in E-flat was on a Boston Pops album with Arthur Fiedler conducting and Al Hirt playing the solo. The name of the album was “Pops” Goes the Trumpet. The other tunes recorded on that album included “La Virgen de la Macarena, Eili, Eili, Pavanne, Carnival of Venice, A Trumpeter’s Lullaby, The Toy Trumpet, Bugler’s Holiday, The Lost Chord, and Java…

Belt? What does a belt have to do with music or trumpet playing? Oh, wait a minute, I get it, when a lead trumpet player plays, they belt out the sound. Okay, cool, it makes sense now. Nope, wrong assumption. Don’t worry, I would have thought the same thing, and I am the one writing this. This month’s blog is about a belt that a person wears around their waist. Sort of, about that. Well, I will…

Happy kissy-kissy, smoochy-smoochy, and all things gushy month! This blog entry will be relatively short compared to previous months. It will be a little more transparent, too. Over the last couple of months, I have been working through feelings of loss. Those of you who may know me well know that I don’t like feelings or feeling feelings. I don’t like the feeling of feeling feelings or feeling…

Welcome to a new year. This is my 41st blog entry on my website. I know that not all of the entries are present, but, believe me, this is the 41st. My first blog entry was in September of 2022, and I have written and posted a blog every month since. This past year has been a year full of changes. We moved from Southwest Florida to Central Florida, my wife and I have both started new jobs, and…

One of my favorite movies, ever, is “Joe versus the Volcano”. I believe that I mentioned it in a previous blog. I had also mentioned and used a painting that my daughter made for me of Joe sitting on luggage, playing a ukulele, while floating in the ocean. For this blog, I decided to use one of the promo pictures of the movie, just in case you wanted to look it up. You can search for it by the…

Band Is Best! The title for this month’s blog should be band, orchestra, choir, the study of music, listening to music, and music in general is the best. But I like alliteration, therefore I decided on Band is best. The American Scientist published an article highlighting a program called, Harmony Project and its founder, Margaret Martin. Martin started the Harmony Project in Los Angeles…

I strive to keep my blogs positive. I will maintain my spirit of positivity even though I will briefly discuss the topic of loss. Life, love, and loss are all positives with a dash of not-so-positives. (Did you see how skillfully I stayed away from using the word negative?) Life happens. A simple statement and often overused as an excuse by people when they make choices in their lives that…

The year was 1988, and I was but a young lad of 18. I was enrolled in 18 credit hours at Indiana State University as a music major and had completed my first collegiate band camp. It was a great experience. I had never played in a group that had so many trumpet players before, and it was a blast. The trumpet section was a group of people who had great attitudes and didn’t mind a freshman coming…

I am a day late on posting the blog. It feels weird. I don’t like being late. A lot has happened in July; no excuses, just a lot of happenings. Originally, I was going to title this month’s blog, “Use Your Powers for Good.” I will touch on the concept a little in this blog, but it will not be the main topic. Being on time, well, the concept of being early is being on time, has been preached from…

I have had the opportunity to play in quite a few cover bands, jazz groups, symphonic ensembles, and various other musical genres that allow the sound of the trumpet to grace their timbre. Playing my trumpet is something that I love to do. It is a passion of mine, and there are times when I make a dollar or two from playing. However, the band that I have learned the most about being a trumpet…

Some people spend their entire lives attempting to be famous or become a legend. Some people become a legend because they are the type of person that legends are made of. Some people are simply legends in their minds. Some people do legendary things. Some people accomplish feats that are considered legendary, only to be forgotten when others assimilate the feats. I will give you an example. My son…

Happy New Year everyone! I have had an interesting battle with myself while writing this month’s blog. The original January 2025 blog began as follows: Ignorance - Lack of knowledge or information. “I can’t”. “I don’t want to”. “I will never be able to”. Those phrases, and many others, are typically followed by words of encouragement by a friend, teacher, or mentor meant to squash the negative talk. The intent is to boost the morale of the person who muttered the “no-can-do” phrases of defeat. A few replies would be pontificated after a person states they cannot do something. Such as…

Why? Why are we, musicians? Why do we perform music? Why do we listen to music? “Why,” can be one of the most difficult questions to answer. It can also be one of the easiest questions to answer.
